Dr. Leigh Salge has been a lifelong lover of animals (particularly cats) but took a rather indirect approach to becoming a veterinarian. She initially received her Bachelor of Arts in English at the University of Colorado Boulder. Afterwards, Leigh worked in different fields including as a stage hand in theaters, in an elementary school, and as a children’s museum manager. Deciding she needed a new focus she completed a Master Gardener certification through the Colorado State University Extension Service. Through these experiences Leigh realized she was better with animals than plants or children and so chose to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine.
Leigh received her Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry from the University of Colorado Denver and then completed a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. During veterinary school she additionally became certified in Medical Acupuncture for Veterinarians through MAV (now CuraCore) and participated in special training in Foreign Animal Diseases with the USDA APHIS. Afterwards, Dr. Salge completed a year long rotating internship in small animal medicine and emergency at Alameda East Veterinary Hospital in Denver, Colorado. She has since worked in general practice and emergency hospitals in both Colorado and California, spending time as a relief veterinarian at Guide Dogs for the Blind and the San Francisco SPCA as well as PESCM prior to joining the staff there as an emergency veterinarian. Currently Leigh is working on certification in hospice and palliative care through the IAAHPC.
In her free time you can find Leigh cooking, reading, traveling, and starting but not finishing craft/house projects. She lives in San Anselmo with her family including her husband, two kids, two cats adopted from the Macy’s SFSPCA holiday windows, and a chihuahua-terrier mix adopted from Marin Humane Society who has a hearty dislike of labradors, golden retrievers, E-bikes and ceiling fans.
