PESCM Honors Black History Month
By Erin Smythe-Morey, DVM
Did you know that only 1.3% of veterinarians in the United States are black? And only 3.7% of vet assistants and 5.7% of RVTs, according to a 2022 report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. As with most forms of underrepresentation, the lack of diversity in the industry, as a whole, is multifactorial and rooted in American history and culture.
But then there’s PESCM…
As a black veterinarian, I feel so lucky to work at such an inclusive and culturally diverse hospital with so many wonderful people. We’ve all pioneered our way through various challenges to get here, and that’s something to celebrate!
In honor of Black History Month, we wanted to take a moment to highlight one pioneering black veterinarian: Dr. Alfreda Johnson Webb
On behalf of PESCM Leadership, Happy Black History Month!
